You can do it by setting the limitation screw which is close to the motor using the screw driver or chain glide.

If your garage door opener just hums and will not start, you better check the opener. You should make sure that the traveler arm latch is not attached to the stop bolt or the opener housing. This garage door problem will cause the condition where the chain has to be loosened before the unit can release. Other garage door problems that usually occur are like the garage door opener is dead or your remote has the short range.
